Buying New Bedroom Furniture

There are many factors to consider when purchasing new bedroom furniture, and with so many options, it can seem like an overwhelming task. Bedroom furniture should reflect your personal style, while creating a relaxing atmosphere. Here are a few factors to consider before you start the purchasing process:

Room Constraints-Measuring your bedroom and the layout before you begin the shopping process will help dictate what size furniture will fit into the room. For example, if you choose a king size bed, will there be enough room for two nightstands and a dresser? To help you decide what bed size is appropriate, the most common bed sizes are as follows: · Twin beds: 39" wide x 75" long · Extra Long Twin beds: 39" wide x 80" long · Double beds/Full beds: 54" wide x 75" long · Queen size beds:60" wide x 80" long · Standard King/Eastern King size beds: 76" wide x 80" long · California King/Western King size beds: 72" wide x 84" long Style-If you have an idea of your personal design style already, you can find furniture pieces to compliment that style. If not, you might want to look online or in magazines for inspiration and ideas. If your style is traditional, wood furniture is a good choice. If you prefer modern design, look for furniture with simple lines. Lighter wood colors also help give a contemporary look. If your style is eclectic, try mixing different materials such as metal and wood. Wood comes in a variety of colors and textures, and your choice should match your style. Some of the most popular hardwoods are maple, oak, and cherry. Softwoods are lighter weight (pine and cedar for example) so may work best if you are on a budget.

Design Features-The bed is the central focal point of any bedroom. After choosing the frame size, pick a headboard that fits your style. Most bedroom sets include a bed frame and headboard, bedside tables, and a dresser, but may also offer a mirror, armoire, or storage chest. Buying bedroom furniture as a set is often more aesthetically appealing because the additional pieces will match your bed frame. Consider what you use your bedroom for to determine exactly what pieces you need. Do you need a work desk or bookshelves? An extra dresser because the closet is small?

Quality-Determining the quality of the furniture, and the wood, is especially important before you buy. Door and drawers should be aligned and should open and close smoothly. Corners and hardware should be sturdy and secure. In order to determine the quality of the finish, run your hand over the piece to see if you feel any imperfections. The finish should be smooth, and even distressed or antique furniture should not have rough patches.

The manufacturer or store guarantee on the bedroom furniture is also important so you do not have to replace something yourself if defective.

Budget-There are bedroom sets to fit any budget. Buying an entire set can help save money and time in the long run but if you cannot afford to buy an entire bedroom set at once, consider buying a few pieces at a time and then adding to it as time goes on.Bedroom Furniture

Buying New Furniture

When you need new furniture, it can be tempting to walk into a furniture store and hope that the perfect item will jump out at you. However, there are advantages to taking a more carefully planned approach. There are several things to consider when buying new furniture; make sure you dont overlook any of them if you want to avoid being disappointed by your purchase.

First, you need to consider the sizes of the furniture items you are looking at. Measure the space that the furniture will be going into, and write down the dimensions so that in the store you can narrow your search to pieces of the right size. Buying a piece of furniture and bringing it home only to find it doesnt fit into the space it was intended for is a frustrating experience, so always double check the dimensions before you buy.

Take some time to examine the quality of the furniture before you hand over money. Is it well-made? Will it stand up to everyday wear and tear? You might not be a furniture expert, but there are some simple checks you can do to get an idea of the quality of the craftsmanship. Look at the joints of wooden furniture are they neatly finished? If the pieces of wood fit together poorly, with large gaps that may have been filled in with glue or filler, then alarm bells should be ringing. Always check for movement in the joints: any looseness is likely to get worse with time until the joint eventually falls apart.

Check the seams of fabric coverings to make sure they are securely stitched. If the cover is removable, you should also check that the zipper or other fastening mechanism works properly. Second-hand furniture in particular often has worn or faded patches. Make sure you are aware of any defects before you buy.

Finally, you should consider the style of the furniture. Will it fit in with the rest of your home? Does it match your color scheme? If possible, take swatches that match your homes paint colors, wallpapers, and fabrics with you to the furniture store, so that you can compare them against the pieces of furniture you are considering.

You should also consider how the furniture will meet your needs in the future. Many homeowners find themselves grimacing at their trendy furniture choices a few years later when the fashion has changed. Instead of jumping on the latest bandwagon, invest in timeless classic pieces that will never go out of style.

Mattress Shopping

Though you may find bed-buying somewhat confusing – after all, you don't do it very often and it's not easy to see what's inside – research shows that the level of customer satisfaction with new mattresses is very high.
The best way to ensure that you're a satisfied customer is to shop at a store you know and trust to give you good information, good service and top quality products. Look for educated salespeople who can guide you through the many choices. If you don't feel your salesperson is knowledgeable or helpful, take your business elsewhere.

In most communities, there is an abundance of shopping choices – from furniture stores to sleep specialty shops to department stores – so you'll be able to find a store where you'll feel you're getting the right information and the right attention. And once your new sleep set has been delivered to your home, you'll probably be so happy with it that you'll wonder why you didn't buy a new bed sooner.

Comparison Shopping for Mattresses

If you're a shopper who likes to compare values from store to store, you should be aware that comparison shopping by model name might lead to frustration. You probably won't find the same model name in one store as you did in another. As with so many products on the market in America today – from apparel to fine furnishings – many retailers prefer to offer products that are exclusive to their store. So find a sleep set you like, then see what levels of comfort and support you can get for the same amount of money in another store. Your best strategy for making a wise purchase is to go to a store where the sales personnel make you feel comfortable, are knowledgeable and helpful. Many will be able to show you illustrated or actual "cutaways" of the interior of the different mattress and foundation choices so you can see what's inside, where much of the quality is hidden. Don't forget to compare store services such as delivery, financing and removal of old bedding as well.
When comparing, remember that a "bargain" mattress and foundation are no bargain when it comes to getting a good night's sleep. Shop for the best value, not the lowest price. And, buy the best you can afford. Considering that you'll probably be using your bed more than any other product you own – including your car, TV, computer or cell phone – the mattress you sleep on is one of the best cost-per-day values on the market today.

What to Look for When Buying a Mattress

COMFORT. Gone are the days when a mattress had to be hard-as-a-board to be good for you. A too-hard mattress may only succeed in putting your shoulders and hips to sleep. You'll sleep best when your bed helps you feel cradled in comfort, cozy and secure.
Today's top quality mattress/foundation ensembles are built for superior comfort. Luxurious new cushioning materials and extra-soft surface treatments create a plusher, more comfortable feel.

SUPPORT. Correct support is the essential ingredient for a healthy body. A good mattress and foundation will gently support your body at all points and keep your spine in the same shape as a person with good standing posture.
Pay special attention to your shoulders, hips, and lower back—the heaviest parts. If there's too little support, you can develop back pain. But if the mattress is too hard for you, you can experience uncomfortable pressure.
A word about "firm." Don't rely on product labels to tell you which mattress will give you the right support. One manufacturer's "firm" may feel harder than another's "extra firm." The only way to find out if the support is right is to lie down and try.

DURABILITY. It's the quality of the materials used and how they're put together that determine how long a mattress and foundation will provide the comfort and support you bought them for. The best assurance of good performance over a good many years is to buy the highest quality sleep set you can afford.
A word about the warranty. Don't look to the warranty to tell you how long to keep your mattress and foundation. It's there to protect you against product defects, not against the gradual loss of comfort and support. A sleep set may still be usable after 15 or 20 years, but it's not giving you the good night's sleep you deserve.

SPACE. Cramped quarters can turn sleeping into a nightly wrestling match. A healthy sleeper moves anywhere from 40-60 times a night, including some dozen full body turns. You need freedom of motion while you sleep and to help you relax while getting to sleep.
If you sleep with a partner, be sure to select queen or king size. Both are not only wider, but several inches longer than the standard "double" (full size), which offers each sleeper only as much space as a baby in a crib.
