While gallery walls seem to be a trendy element of home decor that has been quickly embraced by designers, editors of home decor magazines, and design bloggers, it is, in fact, a decorating concept that has been around for generations. Grandmothers with walls of photos of their grandchildren and art aficionados have been clustering artwork, photos and artifacts together on gallery walls for nearly as long as there have been walls to hang things on. Despite the rich history of gallery walls, one new to creating clusters of wall hangings may be somewhat overwhelmed when facing a blank wall, uncertain of where to begin. These tips may help you get started.
1. Start with your favourite photography, frames, and artwork. Don’t worry if you don’t have much to hang when you start. Once you hang the first pieces on your gallery wall, you can begin to gather artwork, photos, and frames. A gallery wall is like a collection, always in progress, and always growing.
2. Before you begin hanging your artwork and frames, create a template for your gallery wall.
